Centre Nathan Edwards has been confirmed has the new Bridgend Ravens captain ahead of the start of the new season.

Bridgend-born Edwards takes over from the departing Zac O’Driscoll, who has held the captaincy since the start of the 2015/16 season. With over 120 Bridgend games under his belt to date, he will provide great experience within the squad having featured for both the Ospreys and Scarlets, as well as appearing for both Scarlets Premiership Select XV and Scarlets 7’s teams. At Premiership level, Edwards featured 44 times for Llanelli RFC between 2015 and 2017, while also appearing for Newport RFC during the 2014/15 season.

On returning to the Morganstone Brewery Field last season, he went on to feature on 25 occasions, becoming a key member of the squad as they finished the season with eight wins out of the last ten matches, helping the club secure a tenth place finish in the Principality Premiership.

“In 2009 I was overwhelmed to be given the opportunity to represent Bridgend”, Edwards commented.

“Growing up I had always admired the club and to be given the chance to pull on the shirt was a huge privilege! Despite having time away, I always wanted to return to the club and give back tenfold, what it has given me throughout my career.”

With a list of former captains of Bridgend including some former greats of the game, Edwards, a 26 year old teacher, was delighted to follow in their footsteps in captaining his home town club.

“It’s difficult to find the words to describe just how proud and privileged I am to take over the captaincy at Bridgend. I am honoured to join a prestigious group of players who have had the pleasure of captaining this great club.”

Despite a successful end to last season, the newly installed captain was quick to point out that next season will be a challenge, but is confident in the ability of the players, both the retained players and new additions to the squad, to ensuring that the club continues to improve.

“We face a tough year in the Principality Premiership next season but I am confident that we have enough talent and resilience to continue our excellent form from last season. We are building a great culture that we hope will propel Bridgend back to where it belongs - I’m looking forward to being firmly at the forefront!”

Edwards has this week joined the rest of the squad as pre-season has begun at our new training venue at CCYD and we’ll have an interview with him on RavensTV over the next few weeks.
