Ravens underway with win at Wanderers

By Aled Thomas | 13/08/2018

Bridgend Ravens kicked off the 18/19 campaign with a victory at Championship side Glamorgan Wanderers.

Without fourteen first team regulars, there was a chance for Matt Silva and his staff to take a look at some new faces as the club looks to build for a hugely important campaign.

After a summer of glorious sunshine, the new season was welcomed in with heavy rain. As expected, it was an error strewn opening twenty but Bridgend’s Premiership class saw them dominate possession and the set piece.

Livewire scrum half Connor Tantum took the game by the scruff of the neck with a lightning break from a line out. The ball was worked wide to debutant Will Holley who bundled over the line. Holley’s conversion slipped wide of the uprights.

Martyn Fowler’s Wanderers were never going to roll over. A strong forward offensive allowed Tom Penri Ellis cross for a converted score and give the home side the lead.

Bridgend responded amongst a raft of changes. New signing Dan James sniped from scrum half, putting Tom Morgan within inches of scoring. The ball was recycled but Shaun O’Rourke couldn’t quite get the score the move deserved, knocking the ball on just short.

The Ravens attacking efforts were rewarded on the stroke of half time with the award of a penalty try.

The second half saw both coaches make a number of changes which resulted in a disjointed period of play.

Dan James managed to worm his way through the Wanderers defence, setting Stuart Floyd Ellis free for a try with Jacob Lloyd converted.

Another product of Bridgend Athletic making his debut was Will Barraclough. The finishing flourish came when Jamie Murphy picked the ball up at the base of a ruck and set the youngster away for his first try for the club. Jacob Lloyd converted and soon after, the referee blew for full time at a wet Memorial Ground.

Bridgend’s next pre season clash is at the Morganstone Brewery Field against Redingensians Rams (2pm) as part of a double header also featuring Bridgend Athletic v Redingensians Titans (5pm). Admission is just £5, with U16s FREE.
