Merthyr 38-16 Bridgend

By Chris Edmunds | 08/10/2018

A determined effort from a young Ravens side wasn't enough as Merthyr took the spoils in front of the ScrumV cameras at the Wern.

Trailing just 7-3 at the interval, the visitors were left to rue a slow start to the second half when they conceded two tries to the Ironmen. Despite a strong Bridgend fightback, the double champions had too much for the Ravens, coming out 38-16 winners.

With Merthyr gunning for a third title, Bridgend knew the task would be a big one, but the plucky Ravens kept it close with nearly 70 minutes played. The experience and quality of the Ironmen’s bench proved to be vital in the outcome.

Despite an early try from the Hosts’, Bridgend battled hard and managed to head in at the break with a four point deficit as Jamie Murphy landed a penalty with Forty minutes played.

A disastrous start to the second half for the Ravens saw Merthyr stretch out to an eighteen point lead with just 5 minutes of the second half played.

Bridgend regained their composure to build their way back into the game. Connor Tantum bagged the try the Ravens were working so hard for. A big stretch from Shaun O'Rourke saw the second row grab an attempted chip over his head and O'Rourke raced into the Merthyr 22. Connor Tantum was up in support and the lively scrum half produced a magnificent step to get himself over the line. Jamie Murphy's sublime conversion from the touchline helped Bridgend close the gap to 11.

It didn't take Bridgend long before they narrowed the gap even further following a big maul drive of their own. Murphy's resulting penalty got Bridgend back to within eight points with 55 minutes played.

For all their efforts, the Ravens couldn't continue to claw their way back into the match, the strength of the host's bench made a big difference and Merthyr added two late tries to finally down a valiant Ravens side.
