13 Sep Team to face Beddau (A) Specsavers Cup
Bridgend Ravens take a break from Indigo Premiership actions, with attention switching to a Specsavers Cup Round 1 game at Beddau on Saturday afternoon (2:30pm).
It’s been an emotional week for the Ravens. On Friday evening, the club paid tribute to Derrick King prior to their opening league game with Aberavon at the Morganstone Brewery Field. The squad left it all on the field in front of a great Brewery crowd, but a last minute Aled Thomas penalty broke the home side’s hearts, stealing at 27pts to 26 victory.
Beddau got their season underway with the daunting challenge of facing three times Championship champions Pontypool at Pontypool Park. Pooler came out on top by 47pts to 12.
The sides met in the competition in 2016 and it was Bridgend who came out on top by 20pts to 13. They’ve played a couple of friendly matches against one another in the last few seasons too – in 2015 it finished 16pts to 0 and in 50pts to 8 in 2016 both going the way of Bridgend.
Bridgend have a proud history in the WRU National Cup. They’ve been crowned champions three times, most recently in 2015 and made it as far as the quarter final last season. Saturday’s game provides a stiff test against an experienced Championship side, and the Ravens are under no illusions about the task at hand. In reflection of this, Head Coach Steve Jones has named a strong side to make the trip to Castellau Road.
Julian Mogg makes his competitive club debut at full back after joining from Bargoed.
