30 Aug Team News – Maesteg Quins (H)
Bridgend Ravens welcome Maesteg Harlequins to the Morganstone Brewery Field on Friday evening for their final pre-season friendly (7:30pm).
The clash sees the borough’s top two clubs go head to head as they both put the finishing touches on preparations for the new campaign. Bridgend are warming up for a tasty league opener at home with Aberavon a week Friday, and the Quins are preparing for their first hit out of the Championship campaign against Glamorgan Wanderers next Saturday.
The friendly is Bridgend’s second, after a home reverse to Doncaster Knights a fortnight ago. There were plenty of lessons learnt against the fully professional English outfit with 35 players getting a taste of the action under the Morganstone Brewery Field lights. Preparations have returned to the training field over the last fourteen days as the squad looks to further adapt to the methods of the new coaching setup.
Head Coach, Steve Jones names a strong lineup as Bridgend look for a winning end to pre-season. Owen Howe keeps his place at fullback against his former side, in a back three with new signing Andrew Evans and Ravens centurion Mike Powell. Stuart Floyd Ellis pairs up with Nathan Edwards after an impressive cameo from the bench against Doncaster. Jamie Murphy and Chris Williams are the half backs.
There’s a debut in the back row as Ben Mayers Davies joins Adam O’Driscoll and Jordan Collier. Ben Jones and Jack Pope continue their partnership in the second row. Rhodri Apsee, Gareth Harvey and Adam Court comprise the front row.
The Quins name a number of former Ravens in their starting lineup as they prepare for a second season in Wales’ second tier. Most notably, the Ravens will face Adam Hillier Rees, who was part of the Ravens squad which earned promotion to the Premiership and Cameron Jones, who has featured for Bridgend as recently as last season.
