Bridgend Ravens are delighted to announce their fourth new signing of the summer as preparations continue for 2020/21. Dynamic Back Rower, Hemi Barnes joins the club from three time Indigo Premiership champions, Merthyr.

Barnes joins up with Steve Jones’ side after two seasons with the Ironmen. He made 52 appearances for the side based at the Wern during his tenure at the club, but the 24 year old has opted to make the switch to the Ravens, further enhancing their riches in the back row for 2020/21.

Hemi’s rugby career started with Beddau, before being released by the Cardiff Blues academy saw him make the big move to Pontypridd in 2015/16. He quickly became a supporters favourite at Sardis Road and he picked up the Forward of the Year and Player of the Year in May 2016 to wrap up an impressive first season at Premiership level.

During his youth career, Hemi played for the Cardiff Blues Academy and when he stepped up to senior rugby, he also turned out for their Premiership Select Side. His form with Pontypridd saw him earn a move to their local rivals Merthyr, where he spent two seasons, winning the Indigo Premiership title in 2018/19.

After putting pen to paper, Hemi commented ‘I’m really excited to be joining a great club, like Bridgend, where there is a good club ethos and a great group of players that I look forward to taking the field with, guided by good coaching staff.

I hope that during this season, with the Ravens, we are able to push on in the league. Last season, Bridgend beat some good teams and were unlucky with a few of their results. Forwards Coach Alun Wyn Davies was pleased to add Barnes to the squad ‘Hemi joins us at a really good time as we look to improve on last season’s performances. He will be throwing his hat into the ring with a very talented back row pool that we already have at the club.

Despite still being a relative youngster, Hemi comes to us with vast Premiership experience. He’s played a significant role in Merthyr’s success over the last two seasons and had similar success at his previous club, Pontypridd. We’re excited to add him to the group and he’ll bring a strong voice that will be important to us on and off the field.‘_
