20 Mar Bridgend 8-7 Carmarthen Quins

Bridgend continued their fine form at the Dunraven Brewery Field with the narrowest of victories over Carmarthen Quins in awful conditions on Friday night.

Luke Price was the match winner with a second half try and penalty to hand Bridgend the double over their visitors this season. Played before a decent Friday evening crowd, the tie was more entertaining than the score line suggested and few would argue that the Ravens were worthy winners.

A half time score of 0-0 was not a surprise given the torrential rain throughout most of the half. Bridgend had the better moments of the half but were unable to get points on the board as Luke Price sent a couple of penalty efforts wide, and Rhys Williams went close with a kick chase but the Quins held firm.

Carmarthen struck for the opening score 15 minutes into the second half as their powerful maul found plenty of metres and Bridgend struggled to contain their driving effort. Evan Yardley was shown yellow and the resulting penalty saw another huge maul that brought the first score of the game through James Newnian. The successful conversion from Jac Wilson handed the visitors a seven point lead.

Bridgend hit back as maul efforts of their own went close. The pack’s strong carries made hard yards up to the line. Luke Price called for quick ball down the blind side and the Fly Half managed to spin over for the try. The conversion was sent wide leaving the hosts trailing by two points with 15 minutes to play.

Price landed what was to be the match winner as the match entered the final 10 minutes. A 40 metre penalty sailed over to hand Bridgend the lead late on. The hosts showed great game management to wind the clock down and managed to secure a fifth home win in a row.

Next up for Bridgend is a trip to the Indigo Premiership’s form team, Merthyr, on Friday evening.
