15 Aug Bedwas 19-33 Bridgend
Bridgend Ravens kicked off a run of three pre season friendlies with a 5 try to 3 victory over Bedwas at the Bridge Field on Friday evening.
An excellent opening 10 minutes from the visitors led to an early try for Gabe Lacey. Lloyd Wilkins controlled the tempo and the fly half showed his handling skills to set Lacey through a gap for the try. Wilkins converted.
The hosts hit back as Bridgend indiscipline handed Bedwas great field position. The home side had a strong maul all evening, this first effort leading to their opening try.
Directly from the resulting kick off, Cameron Ellis managed to win the ball and snake over for his first of the evening. Wilkins added a fine touchline conversion.
Ellis, who showed real intent in his 30 minute outing, got himself another, Bridgend’s third, with a bustling finish stretching over the line. Lloyd Wilkins added a third conversion to stretch the Ravens into a 14 point lead.
As half time approached, former Raven Dale Rogers bagged the hosts second, clawing his side right back into the game.

Bridgend gave a large number of players an opportunity with an almost entirely different team to open the second half.
The visitors were made to work hard in the opening exchanges of the second half. Bedwas picked up a number of turnovers, halting Bridgend’s early endeavours.
Ryan Wilkins showed his rugby nous with a quick lineout 5 metres from the Bedwas line after tackling the retreating Was’ defender into touch. His quick throw found debutant Naquan Smith for the opener in the second half.
Bedwas were then awarded a penalty try, with Alfie Thomas sent to the bin. The Premiership sides’ maul proved a problem for Bridgend throughout the tie.
The Ravens struck back shortly after with a try from Sam Watkins. The electric hooker pounced on an overthrown Bedwas lineout and showed great pace to bust over for the score. Ben Burnell added the conversion to seal the win for the Ravens in their opening pre-season fixture.
Bridgend will be pleased with a strong performance, with lots of players getting much needed minutes. Next up is a trip to the Gnoll to face Neath, on Friday 21st August with kick off at 7:15pm.
