Bridgend Ravens’ first league visit to Pontypool Park since 2011 saw the hosts run out convincing winners thanks to a dominant second half display.

The two sides have met just twice since the 2011/12 season, With one victory each, Pooler got the better of Bridgend in the 2019 Welsh Cup before Bridgend edged newly promoted Pontypool earlier this season.

Bridgend will have been disappointed to only secure one try in the first half, with a couple of close efforts needing a more accurate final pass.

The visitor’s opening try arrived early through captain Evan Yardley, the hooker touching down on the back of a powerful maul effort. Jamin Hodgkins added the extras.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to hit back. A deliberate knock on penalty was tapped quickly and the hosts bagged their first try.

As the game entered the second quarter, Matthew Jarvis landed a penalty to push Pooler into a three point lead, which they would hold until half time.

Pooler stormed the second half going on to add 29 near unanswered points, Bridgend only managing a consolation with the clock in the red.

The hosts added tries from Ashley Sweet, Morgan Lloyd, Joel Mahoney and Sam Scarfe which took the game well away from Bridgend.

The visitors managed to grab a consolation with time up, Mike Powell made good metres before finding Iwan Griffith. Griffith’s offload found full back Edd Howley, who managed to race over for the try. Hodgkins converted and the full time whistle arrived.

Bridgend have a weekend away from action this coming Saturday, before travelling to top of the table Newport on the 13th April for their next Indigo Premiership fixture.
