Beddau 21-29 Bridgend

Bridgend Ravens made it three from three as their pre-season campaign came to an end with a hard fought victory over Beddau at Mount Pleasant Park on Saturday afternoon.

Bridgend dominated the first half, despite early struggles at scrum time. Benji Williams crashed over for a score in the opening two minutes.

Just two minutes later, first half standout Dan O’Sullivan raced in for a second try for the visitors, Ben Burnell adding the conversion for a 12 point lead with 5 minutes on the clock.

Beddau hit back with their first concerted attack of the match, a driving maul went close before being stopped illegally and the referee ran under the posts. Cody Ray David was shown yellow as a result.

Bridgend offered a powerful maul of their own to grab a third try of the afternoon, Corey Lewis touching down this time.

Shortly before halftime, the Ravens added a fourth through Gabe Lacey. The wing straightened play after some wayward passes and stepped past the Beddau defence, and Burnell added the extras.

Bridgend struck early in the second half, just as they did in the first. Ben Burnell intercepted a looping Beddau pass to launch the counter attack from deep. Gabe Lacey took over and raced in from 60 metres for the try.

The visitors were close to another score but lost the ball over the line, and Beddau kicked long with Bridgend out of position. They then hacked on deep in the the Ravens half, resulting in a tackle off the ball in the scramble back and the referee awarded a second penalty try of the match. Dan Phillips was shown yellow for the indiscretion.

A disjointed final 20 saw lots of endeavour but ultimately little came off for the Ravens. Beddau bagged a third, again the driving maul proving fruitful for the hosts.

Bridgend held on to secure a win against a strong Premiership outfit in Beddau and now turn their attention to their opening Super Rygbi Cymru fixture against Aberavon in two weeks time at Talbot Athletic Ground.
